Description Of Works

Gilmourton is situated half a kilometre off the A71 between Strathaven and Darvel in South Lanarkshire. The old school facility lay at the heart of the village, flanked by both the River Avon and the Ryeland Burn.

The existing building was decanted and demolished, safely storing the existing gable dated 1889 to be incorporated in the new design. The new school provides a stimulating learning environment for the pupils of Gilmourton Primary School as well as providing services for the local community.

The new school gross internal floor area: 620 m² accommodates:-

• Music Room
• Dining/Gym Hall
• Community Kitchenette
• Staff Areas / Offices
• Various Stores
• Kitchen

The Primary School is a Steel frame structure with in-situ concrete ground floor slab. The external envelope comprises of a combination of Concrete Facing Block, White Render and Timber Cladding. The existing Stone gable of the school is reinstated as the Pupil Entrance, complete with dated key stone. An aluminium profiled sheet roof with matching downpipes will interrelate with the aluminium curtain walling. Under floor heating is used throughout the school, sourced primarily from Air Source Heat Pumps. Photovoltaic Panels on the roof provide an environmentally friendly electricity source. Externally, there are 7 Car Parking spaces (1 Disabled Parking Space), and a large playground provision. Features in the playground include a trim trail and an external teaching area. The existing pupil drop off point has been retained and pupils access the new school from here.
